Planning Your Stay in Istanbul

Most international patients stay in Istanbul for 7 days after plastic surgery, and 7 to 10 days for revision or combined procedures.

Your stay is set by medical milestones rather than the calendar: the hospital night, the first check-up, splint or dressing removal, and Dr. Celal's approval to fly.

How Long to Stay in Istanbul After Plastic Surgery: A Procedure-by-Procedure Guide

At a glance

  • For primary rhinoplasty, plan to stay in Istanbul for 7 days. Revision rhinoplasty can need up to 10.
  • Most breast, eyelid and body procedures fit into 7 to 10 days. A face and neck lift or a tummy tuck usually needs around 10.
  • Combined procedures are planned as one recovery, typically 7 to 10 days in Istanbul.
  • You fly home after your final check-up and Dr. Celal's approval. Remote follow-up continues once you are back home.

1. How Long to Stay in Turkey After Surgery: Procedure by Procedure

The most common question we hear from international patients is not about the surgery itself. It is about the flight home. The answer depends on the procedure, because each one has its own checkpoints in the first week.

The table below shows the stay we usually plan for each procedure. Your own plan is confirmed during your online consultation, once Dr. Celal has reviewed your photos and medical history.

ProcedureRecommended stayWhat sets the timing
Primary rhinoplasty7 days1 night in hospital, splint removal around day 5, final check-up
Revision rhinoplasty7–10 daysMore complex graft work and swelling, splint removal, final check-up
Breast augmentation7 days1 night in hospital, first check-up at around one week
Breast lift or breast reduction7–10 daysWound and dressing check, bra fitting
Upper or lower blepharoplasty7 daysStitch removal around day 5 to 7
Lip lift7 daysStitch removal and wound check
Face and neck lift10 days2 nights in hospital, drains, stitch removal in the first week
Tummy tuck10 days2 nights in hospital, wound check, corset fitting
Liposuction7 daysCompression garment check, early swelling review
Brazilian butt lift (BBL)7–10 daysSitting restrictions, which affect how the flight is planned
Combined procedures7–10 daysPlanned around the procedure that needs the longest follow-up

These are typical stays, not fixed rules. Thick skin, a longer operation, or a long-haul flight can each add a day or two, and we would rather plan for that from the start than change your ticket later.

2. Why the First Week in Istanbul Matters

Most of the important checkpoints after plastic surgery happen in the first seven to ten days. This is when the splint comes off after rhinoplasty, when stitches are removed after eyelid or lip surgery, and when drains and dressings are checked after a facelift or tummy tuck.

Staying in Istanbul for this window means Dr. Celal sees your healing in person, at the stage where it tells him the most. If something needs attention, it is dealt with at his clinic on Bağdat Caddesi, not over a video call from another country.

It also takes the pressure off you. The first days are for rest, and it is much easier to rest when you know your flight is not tomorrow.

“Your flight date should follow your healing, not the other way round. We plan the stay around the checkpoints that matter.”

3. What a Typical 7-Day Stay Looks Like

Here is how a standard 7-day stay is usually organized, using primary rhinoplasty as the example. Other procedures follow a similar rhythm, with the check-ups adjusted to the operation.

  • Day 1 Arrival and consultation

Our team meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. You meet Dr. Celal in person, go over the final plan and have your pre-operative tests.

  • Day 2 Surgery day

You are transferred to the hospital. Rhinoplasty takes about 2 hours under general anaesthesia, and you spend one night in hospital for rest and monitoring.

  • Day 3 Back to your hotel

After Dr. Celal's discharge visit, a transfer takes you back to the hotel. The splint stays on, and swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal at this stage.

  • Days 4–6 Rest and gentle walks

Your only job is rest. Short walks are encouraged once you feel up to it, and our team stays reachable throughout.

  • Day 7 Splint removal, final check-up and flight home

The splint comes off at the clinic, about 5 days after surgery. After your final check-up and Dr. Celal's approval, the transfer can take you straight to the airport.

4. Flying Home After Surgery

Once Dr. Celal has cleared you to fly, the flight itself is mostly about comfort and circulation. Sitting still for hours is the main thing to manage, especially after body surgery or a long operation.

Before your flight home

  • Book a flexible ticket, so your return date can move if your healing needs an extra day.
  • Choose an aisle seat, and get up to walk every hour or so on longer flights.
  • Wear compression stockings or your compression garment if Dr. Celal has advised it.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol on the flight.
  • Keep your medication and post-operative instructions in your hand luggage.
  • Don't lift heavy suitcases. Ask for help at the airport and on board.

After rhinoplasty, cabin pressure changes can make the nose feel blocked for a while. That is common and passes. After a BBL, the way you sit during the flight is planned in advance, so mention a long-haul flight during your consultation.

5. Aftercare Once You Are Back Home

Leaving Istanbul does not mean your follow-up ends. Our team keeps in touch through remote check-ins, and you can send photos at agreed timepoints so Dr. Celal can follow your progress.

Healing is a marathon. After rhinoplasty, the tip can take a year or more to fully settle. Breast implants go through the "drop and fluff" phase over the first few months. After a facelift, the final contours refine over 6 to 12 months.

Contact our team straight away if you notice:

  • Sudden swelling on one side
  • Increasing redness, warmth or pain
  • Fever, or any discharge from a wound
  • Shortness of breath or calf pain, especially after a flight. In that case, also seek local emergency care.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I fly home earlier than 7 days after rhinoplasty?

We don't recommend it. The splint usually comes off around day 5, and your final check-up happens after that. Leaving earlier means having the splint removed by someone who has not seen your surgery, and missing the check that tells Dr. Celal how your healing has started.

2. How long should I stay in Istanbul for combined surgery?

For most combined procedures, such as rhinoplasty with breast augmentation, or a facelift with blepharoplasty, we plan 7 to 10 days. The stay is set by the procedure that needs the longest follow-up, so you go through one recovery and one set of check-ups.

3. Can I go sightseeing while I recover?

Gentle walks are good for circulation once you feel ready, and Bağdat Caddesi is a pleasant place to stroll, with the sea a few steps away. Avoid crowds, strong sun and heat, long days on your feet, and anywhere your face or surgical area could get bumped. Save the bigger sightseeing days for later in your stay, or for your next visit.

4. Should someone travel with me?

Having a friend or family member with you is helpful, especially for the first two or three days. If you are travelling alone, our team arranges your transfers, keeps in touch daily and makes sure you know who to call at any hour.

5. What if I need to stay a little longer?

Sometimes the body asks for an extra day or two, for example when swelling is slower to settle or a wound needs another check. Our team helps you extend your hotel stay and change your plans. This is why we always suggest booking a flexible return ticket.
